Embracing a philosophy of continuous design and discovery, I believe in an iterative journey that enables teams to uncover and prioritize the most impactful opportunities. By consistently exploring and refining our approach, we drive outcomes that align with the organization’s objectives, while honing in on the invaluable capabilities that genuinely resonate with and bring value to people’s lives. Through this dynamic process, I strive to create meaningful experiences that make a tangible difference, fostering a user-centric mindset that fuels innovation and drives sustainable success.
1. Discovery
Discovery is undeniably the cornerstone of the design process as it lays the foundation for success. At its core, it involves cultivating a comprehensive and deep understanding of a specific problem space, encompassing all the potential opportunities it holds. Merely scratching the surface won’t suffice; our aim is to delve into the underlying reasons behind the problem.
What past decisions and constraints contributed to the current situation? Who are the individuals we are designing for, and what objectives do they seek to accomplish with the product or feature? What are their goals, needs, pains, and jobs to be done? Throughout the Discovery phase, we employ an array of human-centered research methodologies to unearth valuable insights, gathering intelligence and nurturing empathy towards our users along the way.
A deep and broad understanding of a problem allows us to fully appreciate what a user goes through and to put ourselves in their shoes. It sets the stage for the rest of the design process.
2. Kickoff
The design kickoff marks one of the earliest and most important meetings for a project, where the entire cross-functional team comes together to tackle a specific problem space. It serves as a dynamic forum where all ideas are welcomed, and preliminary user stories begin to take shape. As designers, we gain valuable insights into the realm of possibilities within the given context.
This collaborative session empowers us to address significant challenges faced by real people. Prior to the kickoff, we share the wealth of knowledge gathered during the Discovery phase, ensuring everyone is well-informed.
During this energizing session, we delve into the research once again, immersing ourselves in the users’ perspective and exploring the diverse array of possibilities that lie ahead.
For me, this phase represents the essence of being a designer, as it is characterized by a lack of rigid answers or predefined approaches. It can be a messy and complex journey, but it is precisely within this ambiguity that we discover the tremendous potential for innovation. The kickoff offers an extraordinary opportunity to envision “what could be,” fueling our passion and making the role of a designer an incredibly fulfilling experience.
3. Design
In this phase that follows the Discovery and Design Kickoff, we immerse ourselves in the challenging task of transforming user, product, and business requirements into tangible, visual, and interactive solutions.
Here, the true art of design takes shape as we continuously refine and enhance the fidelity of the work, incorporating newly acquired insights and ideas shared by others. Collaborative discussions and constructive critiques play a vital role in this iterative process.
Ultimately, the aim is to create a testable design that not only addresses the initial problems identified but also aligns seamlessly with the needs and aspirations of its intended users. By meticulously navigating this phase, we strive to deliver solutions that not only solve complex challenges but also ignite genuine delight and satisfaction among those who engage with them.
4. Validate
Designing beautiful solutions that seem perfectly usable to designers alone is not enough. Usability testing plays a crucial role in our process, enabling us to observe and understand how real people interact with our designs.
Contrary to popular belief, usability testing doesn’t have to be expensive, time-consuming, or tedious. In fact, it is an essential step to avoid designing in the dark and assuming that our decisions and judgements thus far have been flawless.
By conducting usability testing, we gain valuable insights into the nuances of technology usage and the diverse contexts in which our work will be utilized. Human experiences are multifaceted, and testing ensures that our solutions can be effectively used by a wide range of individuals in the real world.
Based on the findings from testing, we return to previous steps, armed with invaluable insights. With this user-centric feedback, we refine and enhance the designs, placing a strong emphasis on improving usability in response to moments of confusion or difficulty identified during testing.
Ultimately, these solutions lead to valuable outcomes for the organization; customer needs are being met and even exceeded, creating true value and making a positive difference in the lives of people through thoughtful interaction design.
5. Launch
This stage involves a series of essential activities to support the development team, ensure design quality, and successfully introduce our solutions to the organization and end-users.
During this phase, my team and I work closely with the development team, providing comprehensive support and fostering collaboration. We address any questions or challenges that arise, ensuring a smooth transition from design to implementation. Our goal is to maintain open lines of communication and alignment between the design and development teams.
Quality assurance is a crucial aspect of the Launch phase. We conduct design QA activities, rigorously testing the implemented features against the original design specifications. By doing so, we ensure that the user experience aligns with our intended goals. Any discrepancies or issues discovered during this process are addressed, resulting in a polished and user-friendly product.
Monitoring progress and success metrics are key responsibilities during the Launch phase. We closely track the performance of the launched features and measure their impact against predefined success metrics. This allows us to assess the effectiveness of our design solutions and identify areas for improvement. We value user feedback, leveraging it to inform iterative enhancements and future design iterations.
